Posts assume one extra post beyond each spacing gap — the run always starts and ends on a post.

Estimates only — corners, gates and slope will change your real layout. Confirm with your supplier before ordering.

How it's calculated

Run ÷ spacing, with one extra post.

Posts are placed at every spacing interval along your fence run, plus one — a run always starts and ends on a post, so it needs one more post than the number of gaps between them. Panels follow the same divide-and-round-up logic based on panel width.

FAQ

Common questions

How far apart should fence posts be?

8 ft is a common spacing for most residential wood and vinyl fences, matching standard panel widths. Taller fences, wind exposure, or heavier panel/gate hardware may call for closer spacing — check your fence system's spec.

How many panels do I need?

We divide your fence run by the panel width (8 ft by default) and round up. Corners, gates and slope may change the real layout — treat this as a starting estimate.

Do all posts need concrete?

Most fence posts are set in concrete for stability, typically 1–2 bags of 60 lb concrete mix per post depending on hole size and post height. We default to 2 bags per post.

Does this include gates?

No — add gate hardware and any wider gate posts separately. A gate opening usually needs beefier posts on either side than a standard line post.

Just need post spacing?
