Estimates only — tile only, not grout or thinset. Confirm your specific product's coverage with your supplier.
How it's calculated
Area + waste, ÷ box coverage.
We take your room's area, add your waste percentage for cuts around fixtures and edges, and divide by the coverage of one box — rounded up, since tile is sold in sealed boxes.
FAQ
Common questions
How much extra tile should I buy?
10% covers a straightforward layout. Diagonal patterns, large-format tile, or a room with lots of corners and fixtures (bathrooms especially) often need 15–20% extra.
Do I need to budget for grout and thinset separately?
Yes — this calculator covers tile only. Grout and thinset/mortar are priced and sold separately, based on tile size and grout line width; your tile supplier can recommend quantities for your specific tile.
How much does a box of tile cover?
Coverage varies by tile size — we default to 10 sq ft per box. Check the box for your specific tile and adjust the number above if it differs.
Should I buy tile in whole boxes?
Yes — most tile is sold in sealed boxes. We round up to whole boxes, and it's worth keeping a spare box or two for future repairs since dye lots vary between production runs.
