How it's calculated
Area + waste, ÷ box coverage.
We take your room's area, add your waste percentage for cuts and offcuts, and divide by the coverage of one box — rounded up, since flooring is sold in sealed boxes rather than by the piece.
FAQ
Common questions
How much extra flooring should I buy?
10% is a standard waste allowance for a straightforward rectangular room. Diagonal layouts, lots of doorways, or a room with an irregular shape can push that to 15% or more.
How much does a box of flooring cover?
Coverage varies by product — we default to 20 sq ft per box as a typical figure for laminate and vinyl plank. Check the box you've chosen and adjust the number above if it differs.
Should I buy in whole boxes?
Yes — flooring is sold in sealed boxes and most stores won't split one. The calculator rounds up to whole boxes so you know exactly what to order.
Do I need underlayment too?
Most floating floors (laminate, engineered, some vinyl) need an underlayment pad, priced and sold separately by square footage — budget for the same area as your flooring, plus its own waste allowance.
