How it's calculated

Area × depth, converted to yards.

Mulch is sold by the cubic yard in bulk or by the bag in small fixed volumes. We convert your bed's area and depth to cubic feet, then to cubic yards, and compare that against how many bags it would take at the same volume — so you can see which is the better deal for your project size.

FAQ

Common questions

How deep should mulch be?

2–4 inches is standard for garden beds — enough to suppress weeds and hold moisture without smothering roots. We default to 3 inches; go thinner around delicate plants and up to 4 inches for weed-heavy beds.

Should I buy mulch in bulk or bags?

Bagged mulch (typically 2 cu ft per bag) is convenient for small beds and easy cleanup. Bulk delivery is almost always cheaper per cubic yard once you're covering more than a few hundred square feet — the calculator shows both.

How often does mulch need to be replaced?

Organic mulch (bark, wood chips) breaks down and typically needs topping up once a year. Inorganic mulch (rubber, stone) lasts much longer but doesn't feed the soil the way organic mulch does.

Does mulch depth vary by plant type?

Yes — keep mulch a couple inches back from tree trunks and plant stems to avoid rot, and use a shallower layer (1–2 inches) around annuals and vegetable beds compared to shrub borders.
